Jacksonville, Florida-Down two players due to injury, Edward Waters was still able to rise to the occasion and protect home floor, picking up a 67-59 victory over Southern University at New Orleans in their GCAC home opener on Saturday afternoon at the Adams-Jenkins Complex.

SUNO themselves were shorthanded during the game, only having seven available players and did not use that as an excuse, giving the homestanding Lady Tigers everything they could handle. But, the resolve of the Purple & Orange was evident throughout the game, especially in the third quarter, leading by as much as 14 points.

The Edward Waters defensive press was suffocating throughout much of the contest, as they were able to force 35 Lady Knight turnovers. SUNO did outshoot Edward Waters 44% to 32% including a 25% to 18% edge in three-point shooting. Edward Waters did take a four rebound advantage (45-41) over the vistors, including a dominant 26-7 advantage on the offensive glass.

Jermisha Collins led all scorers on the night with 20 points and three rebounds, while both Mia Leite and Lexia Bell White chipped in with eight points apiece for Edward Waters.

SUNO put four players in double figures led by Sha’Quanta Pettis with 11 points, followed by Andriel Moss, Kennedy Moore, and Jade Alexander all with 10 points apiece.

Edward Waters will welcome the defending GCAC Champion Lady Bleu Devils of Dillard University in a rematch of last season’s GCAC Title Game, on Monday, January 14th at 5:30pm at the Adams-Jenkins Complex.
