Lady Tigers unable to hold lead against Gold Nuggets

Jacksonville, Florida-A third consecutive trip to the GCAC Championship Game was not in the cards for Edward Waters as their season ended prematurely with an Opening Round home loss to #5 seed Xavier, 64-62 in the GCAC Basketball Championships, Wednesday evening at the Adams-Jenkins Complex.

For a team in Edward Waters that prided itself on winning the turnover battle, it was the Lady Tigers that had problems hanging on to the basketball as Xavier forced 20 Lady Tiger turnovers and scored 28 points off of them. The Gold Nuggets reserves also dominated in the game, scoring 30 points off of the bench as well.

Edward Waters led by as much as 11 points at the 3:03 mark of the third quarter, but Xavier was not to be denied as they went on a 23-9 run over the next seven minutes of play to take a 58-56 lead with 6:21 remaining in the fourth. The Gold Nuggets would not look back from there as they were able to hold on to take a two point victory over EWC and advance to face #1 Talladega in the semifinal round on Saturday afternoon in New Orleans.

La’Quanza Glover notched her 20th double-double on the season to lead EWC with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Sha’Kawanza Brown finished with 14 points, Le’Terra Ransom had 12, and in her final collegiate performance in her career, senior Mia Leite had 11 points for the Lady Tigers.

Xavier had three players in double figures led by Shaelynn Moore and Kyla Duncan with 15 points apiece, and Abryhia Irons with 12 points.

Edward Waters closes the 2019-20 season with a 19-11 record and 6-8 in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference play.

A Rasaad Morgan bucket at the 1:29 mark of the second half gave the Tigers a 72-71 lead, but the proverbial nail in the coffin for EWC was a three-pointer from GCAC Co-Player of the Year Malik Amos to give the Bleu Devils a 74-72 lead and were able to close things out from there.
