CARDIAC CATS! TIGERS EARN COME FROM BEHIND HOME VICTORY
no comments

Jacksonville, Florida-In could what only be described as one of the most thrilling home victories in recent EWC Men’s Basketball history, the Tigers clawed their way back from 14 points doing midway through the second half to earn a 65-64 home victory over Southern University at New Orleans in their GCAC home opener Saturday afternoon at the Adams-Jenkins Complex.

The two teams started the contest going back and forth trading buckets before the Knights went on a 7-0 run in the first half and ultimately took a five-point lead going into the locker room. The first seven minutes of the second half belonged to visitors from the “Crescent City” as they stretched their lead to as much as 14 points with 14:25 left in the game. Edward Waters (7-7, 2-1 GCAC) went on an incredible run and ultimately took a 56-55 lead with 3:03 remaining in the second half and never relinquished the advantage from that point. The Tigers led by three points with three seconds left in regulation before SUNO’s (6-12, 0-3 GCAC) Marcel Daniels drew a foul from behind the three-point line. Daniels, who was a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe had the opportunity to send the game into overtime if he could make all three free throws. Luckily for Edward Waters, Daniels could only hit two of his three shots, giving an EWC critical GCAC victory.

SUNO barely outshot the Tigers 44% to 41% but earned a huge advantage in three-point shooting as EWC only hit a season-low 6% from three-point range. The two teams tied in rebounding with 36 boards apiece, with EWC earning the edge in offensive rebounding, 12-9.

The Tigers were able to put four players in double figures, led by Dennis Miles‘ 20 points, nine rebound effort. Arcuas McGhee had another solid game for the Tigers earning a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Chauncey Blakeley continued to be a spark plug off of the bench for the Purple & Orange with 12 points, and Jontavius Little contributed with 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists.

Marcel Daniels led all scorers with 21 points, followed by Chris Mark with 14 points, and Dimitri Cook with 12 points for SUNO.

Edward Waters hosts the three-time defending GCAC champions, Dillard on Monday, January 14th at 7:30 pm at the Adams-Jenkins Complex.
